What to visitin the area
Santo Stefano di Camastra vanta un vastissimo patrimonio storico, artistico ed architettonico, da visitare:
Chiesa del Calvario. It is a church with a single nave located in a decentralized position with respect to the urban centre. In ancient times, its subsoil was used as a crypt, but unfortunately, following a fire, its beauties were lost forever.
Mother Church. Located in the historic centre, it is a church with a Latin cross plan and subdivision into three naves divided by twelve columns in the Baroque style.
Cimitero Vecchio. Located about 1 kilometer from Santo Stefano along the road that leads to Letto Santo, it is a rectangular site that houses about ninety tombs. Thanks to an excavation and restoration work, today we can appreciate the extraordinary majolica tile cladding of the 19th century Stefano production.
Santuario del Letto Santo. The sanctuary enjoys a breathtaking view of the Tyrrhenian coast and the woods of the Nebrodi Park. The current complex consists of a church with a single nave with an adjoining rectory and rooms which originally had a convent use.
Palazzo Trabia. Built by the Duke of Camastra at the end of the 17th century and stands on a natural and suggestive terrace at 80m above sea level. Its plan has a short 'L' flap that encloses a corner of the ancient courtyard. Inside we find valuable frescoes on the ceilings and refined ceramic floors, the result of the creative flair of the Stefano masters. Today it is the seat of the municipality and houses the “Mudis” ceramic art museum.
Museum of ceramics. Born from the idea of making the Trabia palace a temple of history, art, culture and traditions. The museum represents the memory of the past in the rediscovery of ancient traces and at the same time of the present. “Ceramics must not live only by history, but by the renewal that the times oblige”.
The collection consists of a series of objects of the ancient Stefano ceramic tradition, objects of daily use linked to the needs of everyday life. Another reason for pride is the collection of works by the best Italian ceramic artists, with the intention of providing the museum with a prestigious national and international collection of high artistic content.
Palazzo Armao. The Armao palace in a simple 19th century style is full of pictorial decorations on the vaults of some rooms and late 19th century majolica tiles that adorn the halls of the building. Of remarkable workmanship is the ornamental frieze of the main façade of the building which shows a series of paired lions alternating with a simple ornamentation of plant bunches and a veritable catalog of Greek vases which make up 10 different types in terms of shape and decoration. Today it houses the municipal library.
The Wall of Frederick. Urban furniture at the entrance to the town (Messina direction), is a succession of images inspired by the Normans and in particular by Frederick II.
The Flame, war memorial. It is a sculpture in memory of the war dead. The imposing shape, the bright colors and the symbolism of a burning flame is a human metaphor of perseverance, effort and expression of creativity.
